Learn Everywhere with 4-H

What is Learn Everywhere with 4-H?

Public and home schooled students in certain Idaho counties may now earn an animal science or elective high school course credit—as determined by the issuing school—for participation in University of Idaho Extension 4-H Youth Development programming.

Students in grades 7-12 in Ada, Bonneville, Boise, Butte, Kootenai and Twin Falls counties interested in broadening their knowledge and gaining valuable experience in agriculture and civic engagement are encouraged to reach out to their UI Extension county office to learn more about the Learn Everywhere with 4-H program.

Classes

Opportunities are currently being offered in animal science and Know Your Government.

Animal Science Classes

Animal science classes are offered as 100 or 101 level classes, with the 100 level typically serving as a prerequisite for the 101 class. These classes are offered as part of a fall, spring or summer session. The fee for animal science classes is $140 per class.

The following classes are currently available:

Advocacy
Youth will learn about animal agriculture careers and how they connect to each other to make the industry function.

Facilities
Youth will learn how bedding material used in the pen can affect animal comfort. Animal comfort affects performance and growth, ultimately influencing meat quality.

Health and Diseases
Youth will learn why management practices of castration, dehorning (disbudding) and docking are important and how these practices should be properly performed.

Marketing
Youth will learn how to invite buyers to the market animal sale.

Nutrition
Youth will learn about the five major types of feed nutrients. In addition, youth will learn how much water livestock drink per day, on average.

Quality Assurance
Youth will identify products they use in daily life that contain animal by-products. They will learn how to move livestock safely by using animal behaviors and the safety concerns of hauling livestock.

Reproduction
Participants will learn why artificial insemination (AI) is used in livestock production, the tools and procedures and the benefits to producers. Youth will learn genetic concepts including terminology and the heritability of various traits.

Selection
Participants will learn to understand the five basic criteria for selecting a beef animal. Beginners in 4-H and FFA livestock judging will learn proper note-taking format and the structure to oral reasons.

Showring
Youth will learn about correct working equipment needed for livestock showmanship and quality classes at the fair.

Know Your Government Classes

The Know Your Government class may be taken in the spring session only. The fee for this class is $140.

Know Your Government
Students participating in Know Your Government will learn about the state government and judicial system while observing the legislative process in action.
