Preparing for the Career Fair (In-Person or Virtual)

Career fairs bring together organizations and potential future employees to create space for dialogue. These conversations can grow your knowledge, lead to job or internship offers and establish future connections as you build your career. Check out the information below to ensure you are feeling prepared to meet diverse employers, make a great first impression, and use your time well at the fair.

View a list of employers registered to attend a career fair by logging into Handshake. Click on the "Fairs" button on the left-hand navigation bar.

Before the Fall Career Fair:

  • Research the organizations who will be attending the fair. You can see the current list of employers attending in Handshake. Click on the "Fairs" button on the left-hand navigation bar.
  • Meet with a career advisor to have your resume reviewed, practice your elevator pitch and brainstorm questions to ask recruiters.
  • Review the Vandal Career Fair Guide (above) for more tips on how to build confidence and have great conversations with employers.
  • Remember that career fairs are about meeting and connecting with people. You never know where these industry connections may lead you.

Event Details:

  • Professional dress is expected
  • Bring copies of your resume
  • Check in and receive your printed name badge on the east side of the Kibbie Dome
  • Free LinkedIn photos will be available!
  • Some employers will be conducting interviews during or after the career fair, so be prepared for a possible interview!

Brave & Bold at the Career Fair Workshops:

Attendees will learn how to prepare and be successful in engaging with employers at U of I's Career Fair, how the fair will work in Handshake and take away a checklist of things one will need to do before the fair to prepare. Offered multiple dates and times leading up to the fair — simply choose from any of the "Brave & Bold" sessions listed on the Event Calendar.

Career Fair Prep Drop-ins:

Career Services will offer special drop-in hours in the days leading up to the Fair to make sure students and alumni are prepared to engage with employers. Please visit our Event Calendar for the event dates, times and other information.

The Virtual Career Fair will provide the opportunity for students to connect with employers through 10-minute 1:1 sessions and 30-minute group sessions. Recruiters in attendance represent multiple industries and sectors from across the country and bring with them a diverse array of opportunities for Vandals.

More information will become available as employers register and get their schedules posted in Handshake. Registration will open a few weeks prior to the start of the fair, but in the interim you can see the current list of employers attending in Handshake. Click on the "Fairs" button on the left-hand navigation bar.

How to Prepare for the Virtual Career Fair and Engage with Employers (virtual sessions):

Attendees will learn how to prepare and be successful in engaging with employers at U of I's Virtual Career Fair, how the fair will work in Handshake and take away a checklist of things one will need to do before the fair to prepare. Offered multiple dates and times leading up to the fair — simply choose from any of the "Brave & Bold" sessions listed on the Event Calendar.

Virtual Career Fair Prep Drop-ins:

Career Services will offer special drop-in hours in the days leading up to the Fair to make sure students and alumni are prepared to engage with employers. Please visit our Event Calendar for the event dates, times and other information.

Fall, Spring and Teacher Fairs:

Students and alumni do not need to register for in-person career fairs but are encouraged to RSVP in Handshake to stay up-to-date on attending employers and other day-of-event information.

Attendees should check in with staff upon arrival to receive a name tag. The Career Services advising table is available for any last-minute advice.

Virtual Fairs:

Students and alumni are strongly encouraged to register for virtual fairs. Registration will open in late September, but in the interim, you can see the current list of employers attending in Handshake.

When registration opens you will be able to sign up for employer sessions and build your own fair schedule.

Business professional attire is recommended for all students and alumni attending Career Fairs (in-person or virtually). Business casual is recommended at a minimum — no sweats, and no denim

Quick Tips

  • Clothing should be clean. Neutral colors are recommended.
  • Hair should be neat and clean in a style that keeps hair out of the face.
  • Nails should be clean and trimmed.
  • Avoid heavy cologne or perfume.
  • Avoid accessories, jewelry and makeup that is overly distracting.

For attendees without a parking permit, no permit is required in Blue Lot 57 and Red Lot 34, west the Kibbie Dome, during the Career Fair. There are several pay-to-park lots around the Kibbie Dome and Bruce M. Pitman Center career fair locations.

Maps:

One-day Visitor's Permit (employees and students are not eligible):

Off-campus visitors, including U of I alumni can purchase a one-day visitor's pass. A license plate number is needed to make the purchase.

Fall, Spring and Teacher Fairs:

Employers may conduct interviews during in-person fairs and each company controls its own interview schedule.

To express interest in interviewing with a company, talk to recruiters participating in the fair, give them your resume and inquire about interview opportunities. Attending the fair does not guarantee an interview or employment offer.

The day after fall and spring fairs, Career Services organizes a mass interview event on campus. Our staff will check in interviewees and direct them to a general waiting area where interviewers retrieve them when ready.

Virtual Fairs:

Career Services does not organize mass interviews for virtual fairs; however, employers have the option to create interview schedules in Handshake, separate from the virtual fair.

Prepare to Interview:

For interview tips or to set up a mock interview, schedule an appointment with a Career Advisor on VandalStar or contact Career Services at careerservices@uidaho.edu or 208-885-6121.
