Steve McMullen: “Science, values and the backfire effect: why scientists need a paradigm shift in communication”

Steve L. McMullin, Associate Professor Emeritus, Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Virginia Tech

Steve graduated from the University of Idaho with a B.S. in Fisheries Resources in 1978 and completed a M.S. in Fisheries Resources in 1979.  He worked for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks for 10 years as a fisheries biologist, regional fisheries manager, and chief of the Fisheries Management Bureau.  In 1989, Steve moved to Virginia Tech, where he taught a fisheries techniques course and earned the Ph.D.  He became a tenure-track faculty member at Virginia Tech in 1993 and remained there until his retirement in May 2016.  Steve’s research focus at Virginia Tech was in human dimensions of fish and wildlife conservation, with an emphasis on stakeholder involvement in resource planning. He also devoted considerable effort to continuing education, mostly in leadership and communication for natural resource professionals. Steve continues to teach several leadership and communication workshops each year in his retirement.
