Zero Waste Zero Waste: A Fabric Jigsaw Puzzle - 9:30 a.m.
Design and create apparel leaving no fabric waste on the cutting room floor. Learn to sew a zero-waste product. No sewing experience required.

Laser Applications on Fabric - 1:45 p.m.
Explore the effects of a laser on fabric through etching away fiber and color to strategic cutting that transforms the physical and aesthetic properties of the fabric.

Needle Felting - 9:30 a.m.
Go wild with wool!  Learn to create creatures and add embellishments to wool garments with needle felting.

Block Printing with Nature - 1:45 p.m.
Use leaves, petals, potatoes, and plants to create printed pattern designs on cotton fabric.

Thursday

The Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge - 9:30 a.m.
This workshop presents a classic activity for beginners in design thinking. Participants will work in small groups and will have the opportunity to experience what it is like to design and construct an intervention as part of a team. The challenge is to create the tallest free-standing structure in 30 minutes using no more than 20 sticks of spaghetti, 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, and 3 marshmallows.

Collage as Architecture - 1:45 p.m.
This workshop will introduce compositional and organizational foundations as a method of design thinking in architecture. Participants will use a variety of materials to create a composite of an issue relative to the natural, social, or built environments.

Quiltscape - 9:30 a.m.
During this workshop, participants will explore using observational and tactile methods to capture the essence of sites on campus. Participants will incorporate various techniques used to analyze a site. Then, participants will apply these techniques during an outdoor exercise.

Agency and Placemaking - 1:45 p.m.
This workshop, involves the design of a human-scale intervention on the University of Idaho campus. Incorporating principles of structure, qualities of light and conditional elements, participants will represent ideas through hand sketches and model making using a given kit of elements.

Nature Journaling in the Arboretum - 9:30 a.m.
Slow down and dive into the details of the plants, flowers, and trees that make our campus so beautiful. Students will engage in micro and macro observational drawing in the outdoors to explore and record the Visual Elements in our natural world.

Mixed Media Accordion Books - 1:45 p.m.
Participants will use mixed media approaches including, drawing, watercolor, collage, and relief print to create a cohesive composition in an Accordion Book format.

Visual Design: User Interface - 9:30 a.m.
Explore mobile app design and solve real-world problems. Along with Art and Design and College of Business faculty and students, you’ll work on screens of a real app in development for our university and be able to play with the prototype on your phone as we design it together.

Visual Design: User Experience - 1:45 p.m.
Find out how user testing works and how designers use this feedback to improve their mobile products. Along with Art and Design and College of Business faculty and students, you’ll test a live prototype of a real university web product as we make changes to its design together.

Meaningful Moments in Place and Time - 9:30 a.m.
What is at the center of any design? What drives design? What inspires timelessness? Human beings are inside interior spaces 87-90% of their lives. As interior architects and designers, our mission is to design spaces that encourage daily meaningful moments and respond to user needs and aspirations. Bring your imagination and passion to this hands-on workshop that gives you a glimpse of interior architects and designers work.

Communication Design - 1:45 p.m.
Communication is storytelling in multiple “languages;” i.e. sketching, photography, model making, rendering, verbal, etc. Communication to designers is a fluid language of seeing, relating, exploring, creating and sharing. Interior architects and designers use various modes of hands-on communication to capture essence of spaces and places that inspire their designs, explore creative problem solving, communicate solutions to clients and design teams and promote their brand and identity. In this workshop, discover your set of tools that guide your third-place design storytelling and your unique brand.

Furniture Design & Rapid Prototyping - 9:30 a.m.
Furniture is one of the most important factors in any habitable setting, and its design can make or break a space. In this workshop, we will use a regular disposable coffee cup and its cardboard sleeve and transform them into a small-scale piece of furniture. We will begin with a short presentation followed by conceptualizing, ideating & designing on paper. This will be the foundation for further designing a furniture piece and making your ideas come to life using the provided materials.

Designing Interior Spaces for the Senses - 1:45 p.m.
This workshop will be formulated by the senses. Instead of thinking of what you want a space to look like, we will go through some guided exercises using the senses and designing for experience. Each participant (or in teams) will get a fun and unique typology that we will conduct exercises on to break down into its key parts. We will then rebuild it from the ground up with analysis conducted on what types of spaces want to work with which senses.

Note: There are no Thursday or Friday morning workshops in Landscape Architecture.

Introduction to Landscape Architecture - 1:45 p.m.
In this workshop you will design a pocket park for downtown Coeur d’Alene!  Will it include seating for rest and relaxation or a water feature for cooling and aesthetic benefit? Maybe it will include trees for shade and a plaza to be used for any number of events. From New York City’s Central Park to Riverfront Park in Spokane, professional landscape architects create designs that bring people and the natural environment together whether it be in downtowns or in suburban neighborhoods. The workshop will start with an introduction to landscape architecture by the hosts and move to the pocket park problem statement and then analysis, idea synthesis and final plan development.

Design Communication for Landscape Architecture - 1:45 p.m.
In this workshop you will take the design of the pocket for Coeur d’Alene that was completed the previous day and make use of it exploring a host of high impact graphic techniques to communicate the design intent. Efforts will focus on generation of plan graphics, sections, perspectives and use of modeling software to produce effective presentation boards and related deliverables.

Direct and film a story in a virtual world.

Create Your Favorite Game Environment - 9:30 a.m.
Collect and scan 3D objects around you. Bring them in a 3D software and Unreal.

Create Short Videos for the Web - 1:45 p.m.
Render and edit your animations and 3D scenes. We will save a short video.
